Some years are just great.  You feel like "Teacher of the Year" every day.  You talk, they listen.  You teach, they learn.  You spend hours planning the perfect learning experience and it goes beautifully. Students are happy.  Parents are happy.  Your principal is happy.  And you are on cloud nine.  This is not that year!

I repeat,  this is not that year.  This group is different.  They don't like to sit and listen to my lessons. They don't like to talk to their shoulder partner, or their face partner.  They don't like to write... AT ALL!  This year, I am being challenged.  How do I teach this group so they will learn? How do I make them want to learn?

Well, to be honest, I haven't figured it out completely.  I have, however, discovered something that this group LOVES to do.  They like to do their work while standing up and walking around the room! Who knew?  I discovered this quite by accident one day when I asked them to look at some different math problems I had placed around them room.  As I began to dread what I expected to be the ensuing chaos, I noticed that it was actually much more quiet.  Oh, it wasn't totally quiet, they were talking, but they were talking about the assignment!

Lesson learned!  I stated creating activities that required them to get up and "Move Around the Room".  Here is our latest activity - learning about subject, object and possessive pronouns.

First, we learned about the different types of pronouns and added this information to our interactive notebooks.

I placed cards around the room.  The students read the sentences, identify the pronoun and decide if it is a subject, object or possessive pronoun.  They record this on the recording sheet.  There were quite a few discussions about whether "you" was being used as a subject or object pronoun.  This made my teacher heart so happy!

I'd love to hear how it works for you and your students!
